Shanks are designed with weight to engage a signal to the horse's mouth. The weight comes from 1/4" thick stainless steel, pickled steel, or shoeing rasps. The 2 1/2" purchase allows for a looser curb strap to be rode. This lets the mouthpiece engage after 20% of the rein pull. The standard port offers the most tongue relief. Each standard port has a right- and left-hand twist of the chain allowing both sides of the bit to engage. With this function, both sides of the chain lock and become solid giving rider access to both sides of the horse's mouth. This is the most popular mouthpiece because all chain only twists in one direction. Our standard ports are hand twisted to twist in both directions. All mouthpieces are mounted onto stainless steel ball bearings. This offers no pinch.
